Towards the end of 2011 I began a series of drawings as a direct response to connect to my new home on the North Norfolk coast, with work commencing on the wood engravings in 2012. ‘Promenade’ was completed in 2016 for the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers Print Collectors Club and also forms part of this series of limited edition engravings. ‘Promenade’ is from a body of work inspired by a relationship to landscape and ideas about a personal connection between a place you are in and the notion of home. Promenade explores the transformation of space into place whereby we exist in and use space but we experience and make a place through the act of living and working in a landscape. It is through experiencing and constructing landscape narratives we construct a narrative of place and create place understanding and home. We walk to connect: experiential narrative impresses upon us the topography of landscape – a sensual experience of sight, touch, smell and taste, a cognitive mapping reinforcing place attachment.
