Walcott, a small village on the North Norfolk coast, sits behind concrete sea defences, its low-lying position leaving it vulnerable to the forces of the sea. It has suffered significant damage from storm surges and North Sea floods, most notably in 1953, 2007, and 2013. Land and Sea aims to respond to this vulnerability.
Themes of temporality, loss, and fragility reflect the ongoing process of coastal erosion and the ever-present threat of rising sea levels. These engravings serve as both a mapping and recording of this disappearing landscape, exploring place and the stories embedded within it.
This engraving was selected for the International HIT festival of relief printmaking, Haugesund Billedgalleri, Haugesund, Norway. Additional prints from the series can be viewed here.
